Knee Arthroscopy

Knee arthroscopy is a common, outpatient surgical procedure that allows orthopedic surgeons to see and repair problems inside a joint. Using an arthroscope, which is a small, high-resolution camera with the diameter of a pencil, your surgeon will be able to view the tissue inside your knee on a high-definition monitor. He or she can then diagnose the problem and treat it appropriately.

Procedure

During arthroscopy, your surgeon will begin by inserting an arthroscope into your knee joint. The first task is to properly diagnose your problem. Your surgeon will use the image projected on the monitor screen to guide the arthroscope around the joint so he or she can carefully view and assess all of the structures within the joint.

If treatment is needed, your surgeon will insert small surgical instruments into the knee to do what is required, typically repairing or removing any damaged tissues. The instruments are inserted through a few other small incisions around your knee. They may include scissors, motorized shavers, or lasers.

The treatment part of the procedure may last 30 minutes to more than an hour, depending on what needs to be done. Some of the most common treatments for the knee performed through an arthroscope are:

• Removing or repairing torn menisci
• Reconstructing a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
• Trimming torn pieces of articular cartilage (the cartilage covering the surface of bones in the joint)
• Removing loose fragments of bone or cartilage
• Removing inflamed synovial tissue (the membrane covering many of the surfaces within the joint)

Throughout the arthroscopy, a sterile solution is continuously injected to fill the knee joint and rinse away any debris or cloudy fluid. This helps your surgeon maintain a clear view so the structures can be seen in detail. At the end of the procedure, your surgeon will close your incisions (generally with sutures or Steri-Strips™) and then cover them with a soft bandage.
